Romantic Tension and Adventure Reign in Ever the Hunted

Publisher’s Description: Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, a legendary bounty hunter—that is, until her father is murdered. The alleged killer is none other than Cohen Mackay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart.

She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a force to be reckoned with.

Wine Pairing: I recommend a sparkling Santero Moscato. Not only does this gorgeous wine match Ever the Hunted’s BEAUTIFUL cover, but it will make your belly almost as warm and bubbly as the romantic tension between Britta and Cohen will!

Mashup: The Hunger Games meets Truthwitch. This book is what I imagine The Hunger Games would have been like if Katniss and Gale had taken off into the woods of District 12 but still had to fight against a corrupt government…while also having various kinds of magic sprinkled on top.

Why You Should Read This Book: This book is just plain fun! The romantic tension between Britta and Cohen makes it SOOOO hard to put this book down. You’ll want to keep turning the pages just to see what happens between the two of them. Summerhill does a brilliant job of getting our bleeding bookish hearts pumping just enough, and at just the right moments, to keep us glued to these pages. And, as mentioned above, Cohen is VERY swoon worthy.

Britta is smart and tough as nails, and it’s such a pleasure reading through her perspective. The full cast of characters is wildly entertaining, and Summerhill sets up the dynamics between all of them brilliantly in this book, which is the first in what will at least be a duology but will hopefully become a larger series.

The magic system that Summerhill has created is very well done. It’s logical, easy to understand, and has very clear rules, which she adheres to throughout the book. Getting to learn about and experience the magic alongside Britta adds to the overall feeling of intrigue and adventure in this story.
This book is simply a joy to read, and I can’t WAIT for the next installation. That ending tho!
