Coral and Bone Author Interview and Giveaway!

Coral and Bone by Tiffany Daune is a dazzling new story that had me hooked from the very beginning. The beautiful cover and artwork are what initially drew me to this story, but it was Daune’s world building and story development that kept me immersed inside its pages.

Books that include any kind of underwater setting can be very hit and miss for readers, and I can only imagine very difficult to write. However, Daune tackled those elements expertly. This is one of the rare mermaid stories that I actually found believable and entertaining.

I found the plot to be original, and I enjoyed the way the various elements of the story and Halen’s secret backstory were revealed. Very engrossing read.

Interview with Tiffany Daune

Since this title was originally released in 2014, I’m curious to know what your experience has been like publishing the book with OfTomes and with this new and absolutely STUNNING design?

Thank you! I love the cover too! The interior is going to have some spectacular illustrations as well. Oftomes and Eight Little Pages have done a phenomenal job.

Publishing with Oftomes has been an amazing experience. Since the moment, they welcomed me into their family, I’ve had so much love from the current authors and the publishing team. Being a self-published author, comes with challenges. You’re completely alone with every decision. Some writers enjoy this. I however, craved a team to work with.  I was looking for a publisher who not only loved the story, but wanted to support me as an author. I found the whole package with Oftomes.

Creating a world that is underwater seems like it would be really challenging, but you’ve done it so well here. How did you approach the world-building elements of Coral and Bone?

I used to do a lot of scuba diving, so I drew on my experiences as a diver. I also found inspiration from photos of caves in China and around the world. Earth is so magnificent some places can seem like fantasy.

You have such unique and beautiful names for your characters and locations. Were these names that you’d seen before? If not, how did you approach those linguistic elements in this novel?

For Coral and Bone, I wanted names that were easy to pronounce, yet still had a fantasy element. There’s nothing worse then when I’m reading a novel and my brain trips over the names and I end up calling the character by the first initial. When I’m brainstorming names, they kind of just pop into my head. I’ll do a search to see if it means something weird that I’m not aware of and if nothing comes up, I’ll try it out on a character. Most names, I’ve made up, but sometimes they’re inspired by the things I love. Fun Fact: The Coral and Bone character Pepper is named after Marvel’s Pepper Potts.

Can you tell us if you will be publishing Curses & Ash through OfTomes as well?

Yes! The whole series will be published through Oftomes. Look out for announcements coming soon!

How has your experience with being an author on Wattpad and winning the Watty Award helped to develop your career as an author?

I didn’t know what to expect when I joined Wattpad. I had heard it was mostly for fanfiction, so I didn’t really expect to find many readers. I was so wrong. Every genre is represented on Wattpad and the talent of the writers is phenomenal. I’ve met some incredible authors and the readers are so supportive. I recommend Wattpad for every author.

Winning a Watty brought more attention to Coral and Bone, but it also gave me more confidence as a writer. As a self-published author, I had had such a hard time finding readers which made me doubt my writing path. Winning a Watty gave me the courage to continue and the confidence to query Oftomes.

About Tiffany

image4.jpgTiffany Daune writes stories about magick, love and dark creatures lurking in the shadows. She is the author of Coral and Bone (The Siren Chronicles) and a Watty award winner. When not lost in Editland, you can find her reading a book from her towering TBR pile or kicking back and watching movies with her family. She lives on an island, in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by mermaids that are much nicer than the ones found in her books.

I’ve never read a book with an underwater setting before, and I’m definitely intrigued. I’ve never read anything on Wattpad but recently created an account. I’m thinking of putting my short story on there when I’m done with it.

  4. Wattpad reading can be either really hit or miss. I’ve found some gems, but I’ve found some…erm. Yeah. But this sounds like it could be a total hit. The real question that I did not get answered, though, was: DID YOU GET ARIEL VIBES? 😄 Wonderful post, though!! 😀

    1. Hahaha. I can imagine when it’s all self publishing that it could get a little interesting, but I’m sure there is some great stuff as well. If I only had time to read anything outside of my TBR. Maybe one day. I definitely wouldn’t say Ariel. Sorry!!! A little more X-men feel really. Thank you, lovely!!!

      1. Indeed. Gwen Cole of Cold Summer was from there. And I know you read Wendy Higgins before and she was there as well. But honestly. 😄 Wouldn’t that be amazing? 😄 Okay, okay, good to know, so I won’t be all like YES ARIEL and then the X Men show up and I’m like, but where’s Flounder? 😄

      2. It would be SO amazing! Hahaha! Yeah, some of the mermaids are more Ursula than Ariel honesty. It’s pretty cool!

  5. Aww another mermaid story ❤ I love it! I need to read it! And the author seems so grounded and organized… I'm not surprised she won the Watty Awad!
I love the cover and the plot so let's see how the actual story fares 🙂 I'll be adding it to my never-ending TBR and crossing my fingers to get to it soon!
