Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag!

I’ve been tagged a few times for this one, and I’m SO SORRY, because I can’t remember who all tagged me. I really need to be better at keeping track of book tags. I lose them in all the book craziness! Because, clearly, I am FREAKING OUT about the amount of books I have read and still have left to read this year.

When my girl Joss from Teal Reader called me out on BookTube though, I decided it was time to participate. I got to meet this lovely lady at YALLWEST this year, and she is such a fun and genuine person. Be sure to check out her YouTube channel and blog and give her a follow! Seriously, she’s awesome!

Biggest Disappointment

For the record, I HATE this question. This book was one of only two books I’ve DNF’d in the past two years. I love some of Cohn’s other books, but I just couldn’t connect with this story.

Biggest Surprise

I’m going to interpret this as a book that most exceeded my expectations. I expected The Serpent King to be good. I did not expect it to be freaking phenomenal. This book needs to be required reading for everyone!

Well, about 100 more, but here’s a handful of my top picks.

I Tag…

Well, I’m pretty late to this party, so I’ll just make sure my book bestie Sarah at The Clever Reader has been tagged and leave it at that. 🙂

This was awesome!! I’m so glad you got a chance to do this tag because it’s fun! I need to add the Serpent King on top of my TBR! Thank you for your shoutout, you are so sweet <3

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thanks, Joss! I probably wouldn’t have ever done it if you hadn’t tagged me. LOL. And yes! If I haven’t convinced you to read TSK, Christy is definitely going to! LOL. And back at you, lady!

  2. LairOfBooks says:

Emily is AWESOME! she is def one of my fave debut authors this year as well, Hundredth Queen was def lush. I have not yet read The Color Project but I’ve been hearing such great things that I’ve added it to my TBR, glad to see it as your fave so far this year. I am waiting with bated breath for Because You Love to Hate Me as well so you are not alone 😉

To think it’s only July yet we have so many more amazing titles headed our way <3!

      • LairOfBooks says:

I’m finishing up Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue & starting Library of Fates…and then July looks INSANE! 😱trying to be good with arc deadlines and not get sidetracked but soooo hard with so many new releases lol.

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, nice! How did you like Gentleman’s Guide? Mackenzi was actually here last night. I am dying to read Library of Fates. That’s on my July 11th list we were talking about. LOL. 🙂 It is so hard to keep up with all the books! I kind of wish I only liked one genre of YA, but I love them all and want to read them ALL! LOL.

      • LairOfBooks says:

Loved it Krysti! It was a ton of fun to read and I’m now so looking forward to the sequel of sorts The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy 🤗🤗🤗 & I’m 60 pgs into Library of Fates (will be reading a chunk tonight) & really enjoying the story. Actually! There are some similarities btwn Library of Fates & Hundredth Queen 😃& yea I totally understand, I wanna read them all too! *need a body double* 😂

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, my gosh! I am so looking forward to that sequel as well! If it’s anything like the first, then it’s going to be such fun. Let me know what you think of Library of Fates! I have been so excited to read it but hearing mixed reviews now. Definitely need a body double. one that will do the Muggle job for me. LOL. So let me know if you figure that out!

      • LairOfBooks says:

Yes! Omygosh I can’t wait 🙌🏼 yikes! I typically stay away from reviews when I’m reading an arc because I’m so easily dissuaded lol so I haven’t seen the mixed reviews 😕hmmm….whelp, I’ll soon know how I feel about it 🤞🏼will def let you know 💜 & yes I’ve seriously dreamt of a body dibble who’d go to work for me while I read away the hours of my day 😂

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Yay! I am terrible at not reading reviews. It is hard to block all those voices out when you’re reading yourself though, so I need to be better at it. I still want to know what you think of this one though. 😁

      • LairOfBooks says:

It sure is hard to block them out but I try my darndest LOL! I am at about 65% & the magical elements have been introduced so now it’s when it’s showing how it stands apart from other similar YA Fantasies. Enjoying so far but I will let you know my final verdict soon 😉

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Awesome! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! I’m definitely reading it next week.

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

She is! And she’s an awesome person on top of writing awesome books! The Hundredth Queen was so great. I’m so happy to hear you liked it as well! I am so excited for Because you Love to Hate Me. My day on July 11th is definitely booked for that one! Can’t wait!

It is insane that it’s only July and we’ve had this many and there’s still so many to go. Plus there’s all the great ones that I didn’t have time for. LOL!

      • LairOfBooks says:

Bahaaaa!!! Us bookworms always have our eye on the calendar 😂 yes July 11th is going to see me taking a trip over to the bookstore with a big smile on my face. Good luck to anyone trying to reach me 😂

Emily just seems so personable and was really sweet during the one exchange I had with her through DM. I love debut authors that stay in touch with their fans even after a review has been posted. I’m very eagerly anticipating the sequel, I know you’ve prob already read it *eeeeeeK* so excited & again it’s purple so yay! Lol 💜

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

I know, right?! It’s so, so true. July 11th is a BIG day. There are like four books coming out that day that are going to be hard for me to choose between.

Debut authors are so much fun. Their excitement is definitely contagious, and I love their enthusiasm to interact with their fans. I did read The Fire Queen a couple weeks ago, and I LOVED it every bit as much as the first. And the cover is GORGEOUS. We need more purple covers!

      • LairOfBooks says:

You have me looking at my planner with one eye hoping it’s really not that many but it is! Haha! 🤣 I don’t know how you do it, you read so fast! Lol. I agree, debut authors are a ton of fun to interact with & very enthusiastic. EeeeeK! So happy to hear you loved The Fire Queen 🙌🏼 I didn’t reach out to Emily this time seeing as I’m really trying to get back on track with arcs but I so want to buy them both for my shelves 😍 we def need more purple covers 😆💜😆

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

I only read that fast, because I listen to audiobooks during my commute, while I workout, and when I can at work too. I did love it so much! I’m actually doing a post about it tomorrow with a pre-order giveaway. I only do giveaways myself for books I really love. I hear you with catching up on ARCs though. That’s the constant book blogger struggle. And YES to more purple covers!!! 😀

      • LairOfBooks says:

I’m really trying to resume my audiobooks but when it comes to YA Fantasy which I read a lot of…it’s hard finding good & engaging narrators. I usually stick to non-fiction and autobiographies on audible…any good YA audiobook recommendations? & yay I’ll be sure to throw my 🎩 in the ring for your giveaway 🤞🏼😃💕

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

I love pretty much any audiobook honestly. The narrators don’t really put me off. I even have Siri read them to me sometimes, so I may not be a good judge of that. LOL. And thanks, love! <3<3<3

      • LairOfBooks says:

Bahhhhha! I can’t *giggles* smh, I could not listen to Siri read my book, very creepy robotic voice so i am very impressed my friend lol!

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

It is super strange at first. Not gonna lie. But you totally get used to it after a minute.

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

With that book, I can say with confidence that you won’t be disappointed! I don’t watch a ton of TV/movies (because of all the books), so that was the hardest question for me! And thank you so much! I really appreciate you thinking of me and my blog!

  3. ravenblake99 says:

I haven’t read the Hundredth Queen yet but i’m planning to read it in July. I’m so excited for Because You Love To Hate Me. I already have I Believe In a Thing called Love in my tbr and I’m so glad that you loved it. Burning Glass isn’t really my favorite book but I’m glad to hear that its sequel is even better. I might give it a shot. I CAN’T WAIT TO READ WONDER WOMAN!!! 🙂

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, awesome! I hope you enjoy it! Let me know. 🙂 So many amazing books out there! I do highly recommend Crystal Blade, but I LOVED Burning Glass too. 🙂 And YES! Wonder Woman!!!! <3<3<3

  4. kozbisa says:

The Serpent King is one of my all-time favorites! And I agree, I Believe in the Thing Called Love is a total happy inducing book. I have not seen Before I Fall yet, because I was kind of afraid. It’s my favorite Oliver book, but you liking it gives me more confidence to see it.

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Isn’t it wonderful?! I cannot gush over that book enough. I feel like that movie is really true to the book, so if you like the book, I’m confident you’d like it. 🙂

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

It does! I love books with flowers on the cover! Yeah, it’s definitely not scifi, and it’s PHENOMENAL. Cannot recommend it enough!

  5. Jackie @ toomuchofabooknerd says:

Have I already told you that I’m in love with your new design? No? Well, this is me telling you then XD Everything looks so pretty and neat and I am loving the new header!

And I’ve seen you talk about The Color Project in a few of your others posts (and in the comments of Mandy’s posts as well :P) and it sounds really good! I’ll have to add it to my TBR!

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Awww, thanks, Jackie! I like it so much better. I have been GUSHING about The Color Project a lot lately. LOL. It is so wonderful! 😀

  6. bookprincessreviews says:

Brilliant, brilliant, Krysti!! <3 It was so hard to just pick one favorite. It was insane. And I didn't know Goodbye Days made you cry *moves up on the TBR because I want to a special, crying book* Cannot wait to see what the rest of the book year holds for you and hope it is amazing as it has been! 😀

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thanks, lady! That was the worst question ever, but I do stand by my decision. 🙂 Cry might be an understatement. I was a sobbing wreck. LOL. Back at you! Here’s to LOTS of more amazing books to read this year!

      • bookprincessreviews says:

Ahahahaha, yes! <3 This year has given us soooo many to choose from, so I clearly need to get on it. But oh gosh, that doesn't sound pleasant but also kind of good? Goodness, I should have grabbed this sooner. And YES. I have a good feeling the second half might be even better?

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

It’s so true! Also, on a side note, I REALLY liked Lucky in Love. So hopefully you’ll like that one too. 🙂 I definitely feel like the second half will be better! I feel like I’m FINALLY starting to figure out some kind of organization, and that will help with the book chill a bit at least. 🙂

      • bookprincessreviews says:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m super excited. It sounds SO cute, so I’m SUPER excited that you got into it and it got into the groove. Ooooh, I saw you were adding a bunch of books so I figured there was some sort of organizing going on.

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Yay!!! Oh, I hope you like it as much as I did. Lady, I finally decided that I am going to read the books that I really want to read and forget about what I think I “should” be reading. So I’m going to read so many contemporaries this month! I cannot wait!!! Taking steps toward achieving that book chill. 😉

      • bookprincessreviews says:

*screaming* YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, KRYSTI. I’m literally sooooooo excited for you. So many contemporaries just puts you such a good mood and makes you super happy. I super can’t wait to see what you have in store. 😀 And lol, that is definitely a great step. 😉

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

I knew you would totally share my contemporary excitement with me! It doesn’t seem like nearly enough people love contemporary nearly enough. LOL. But I feel like the tides are changing a bit now. We will have to chat about all the contemporary goodness! THANK YOU!!!

      • bookprincessreviews says:

YES. But I totally agree – I didn’t realize how many people were strict non-contemporary people. I kind of always thought that was THE genre for YA but apparently fantasy? XD BUT WE WILL. I’ll be on the lookout for all of your posts and will totally fangirl with you! <3

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

It definitely seems that fantasy is the dominant genre, but maybe it depends on where you live? IDK. 🤷‍♀️ Bring on the fluffy fangirling!

      • bookprincessreviews says:

Oh, true, true. That’s a really good point. But yesssssssss. I just ended up reading Romeo and What’s Her Name, and omg, it’s SO ridiculously cute. I’m like, I need to go recommend this to Krysti, ASAP. So many adorable moments.

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, I’ve totally been eyeballing that one! I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed it! Adding it to my new contemporary list in GR now! Thanks for the rec, lady!!! <3<3<3

  7. Lydia Tewkesbury says:

How is it mid year?! I don’t understand this. I am excited for They Both Die at the End too. But I think it’s mostly because one of my favourite books ever is this weird horror novel called John Dies at the End, so I’m hoping it’s good through name similarity.
