I’m so happy to have Ann Aguirre here on the blog today to talk about the latest novel in her Razorland series, Vanguard! Make sure to check out our Q&A below and add this latest novel in Aguirre’s epic series to those TBR lists!
About the Book
Title: VANGUARD (Razorland #4)
Author: Ann Aguirre
Release Date: July 25, 2017
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook
The Razorland saga continues. Since the war ended, Tegan has dreamed of an epic journey, so when she has the opportunity to sign on as ship’s doctor, she can’t wait. It’s past time to chart her course. Millie Faraday, the kindest girl in the free territories, also yearns to outrun her reputation, and warrior-poet James Morrow would follow Tegan to the ends of the earth.
Their company seems set, but fate brings one more to their number. Tegan will battle incredible odds while aiding Szarok, the Uroch vanguard, who has ventured forth to save his people. Szarok is strange and beautiful, like a flower that blooms only in the dark. She shouldn’t allow him close, as such a relationship is both alien and forbidden. But through stormy seas and strange lands, she will become stronger than she ever knew.
1) Wow! It must be so exciting to have book four in the Razorland series about to release! Has there been a particular book in this phenomenal series that you most enjoyed writing?
I enjoyed writing Horde, because there’s something really satisfying about delivering a strong finale to eager readers, but it was so fantastic, returning to the Razorland world after a hiatus, that I’m going to say Vanguard was the most enjoyable to write. Plus, I really love a forbidden romance.
2) You have created a cast of such captivating characters in this series. Is there one that you most identified with? Were any of them more challenging for you to write?
Tegan has a lot in common with me in many ways. She’s intellectual, she’s gone through real hardships and abuse, but she’s still pursuing her dreams. Strength isn’t always measured by physical prowess and there’s no doubt that she has mental fortitude to burn. It was a challenge to get her truths on page, though, because I had to tap some fairly dark memories to bring out that authentic emotional. With some scenes, I did a lot of crying as I typed.
3) What are some YA Science Fiction novels that you would recommend to fans of Razorland?
False Hearts by Laura Lam
Want by Cindy Pon
Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi
Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis
4) Do you have any plans that you can share with us for future Razorland novels?
In many ways, VANGUARD is a bridge book, wrapping up the apocalypse from the main trilogy and showing readers that the world is changing. Eventually, I plan to write an epic fantasy series set in that world, 500 years in the future. Terry Brooks wrote a fantasy set in a world that been destroyed and rebuilt, and then later wrote about that destruction. I’ve flipped that order and shown readers how our world ended, giving rise to these new lands.
5) I love it when books include forbidden romances! What inspired you to add that as an element in Vanguard?
I’ve always wanted to write about two characters falling in love, who absolutely should not work together, but somehow, they fit and complete each other. I want to make readers sigh and swoon over unlikely love interests. That’s my favorite type of ship. A character being physically attractive isn’t enough to sway me, and often, I’m attracted to extraordinary pairings, like Hellboy and Liz.
About the Author
Ann Aguirre is a USA Today bestselling author with a degree in English Literature; before she began writing full time, she was a clown, a clerk, a voice actress, and a savior of stray kittens, not necessarily in that order. She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in sunny Mexico with her husband, children, and various pets. She writes all kinds of genre fiction for adults and teens.
