About the Book
Title: Mask of Shadows
Author: Linsey Miller
Pub. Date: August 29, 2017
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class and the nobles who destroyed their home.
When Sal Leon steals a poster announcing open auditions for the Left Hand, a powerful collection of the Queen’s personal assassins named for the rings she wears — Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, and Opal — their world changes. They know it’s a chance for a new life.
Except the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. But Sal must survive to put their real reason for auditioning into play: revenge.
1- Congratulations on your beautiful debut novel! What has been the best part of being a debut author for you?
Thank you! I’ve really loved meeting and talking to other writers and readers. I got to meet several people who had read Mask of Shadows at ALA, and it was amazing to talk to them in person. The YA community is definitely the best part.
2- Sal is such a wonderful character! Between the fact that they’re gender fluid and a highly skilled thief, I could not get enough of them. Do you have any favorite quotes from Sal in this book that you can share with us?
Oh, is it arrogant if I say most of them? I really love Sal. Probably my favorite conversation in the whole book is Sal and Maud talking after the leap of trust from the window.
3- The audition element of this story was so much fun to read. If you were any auditioner, do you think you’d be able to become the Left Hand?
I would die immediately on day 1 the moment I set foot there. In fact, they would’ve turned me away. There’s no way I’m physically skilled enough to be an assassin. Could I be a spy? Maybe. Could I be a baker around the corner selling audition-themed turnovers? Absolutely. No way could I be part of the Left Hand, though.
4- What was the single best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?
To read your writing aloud. I do it constantly now, and it’s a great help.
5- What are some of your favorite 2017 debut novels so far?
A lot. Off the top of my head there are: FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS by Julie C. Dao, THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas, BLOOD ROSE REBELLION by Rosalyn Eves, EMPRESS OF A THOUSAND SKIES by Rhoda Belleza, AMERICAN STREET by Ibi Zoboi, REBEL SEOUL by Axie Oh, THE GIRL WITH THE RED BALLOON by Katherine Locke, WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI by Sandhya Menon, SHADOW RUN by AdriAnne Strickland and Michael Miller, and BROODING YA HERO by Carrie DiRisio.
6- Are you currently working on book two in this series, or do you have any other projects you’re working on that you can tell us anything about?
I am currently working on book 2! The sequel to Mask of Shadows will round out the duology, and I’m currently revising it. Other than that, I have a draft of a completely new and different YA fantasy I’m working on that involves heists, gods, and a centuries-long con.
