Four travelers meet in Bolivia and set off into the heart of the Amazon rainforest, but what begins as a dream adventure quickly deteriorates into a dangerous nightmare, and after weeks of wandering in the dense undergrowth, the four backpackers split up into two groups. But when a terrible rafting accident separates him from his partner, Yossi is forced to survive for weeks alone against one of the wildest backdrops on the planet. Stranded without a knife, map, or survival training, he must improvise shelter and forage for wild fruit to survive. As his feet begin to rot during raging storms, as he loses all sense of direction, and as he begins to lose all hope, he wonders whether he will make it out of the jungle alive.
The basis of an upcoming motion picture starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jungle is the story of friendship and the teachings of nature, and a terrifying true account that you won’t be able to put down.

Author Q&A

1- Jungle is an incredible true story of the way you were able to survive a very terrifying situation. What do you think is the single best piece of survival advice everyone needs to know.

That you don’t need to know because you already know so well, beyond your capacity to imagine how strong and creative you are when it comes to clinging on to dear life. You don’t need my advice or that of any other expert, you are an animal – hello!, yes I know you forgot that, I know you think we humans are demigods, above nature here to dominate and exploit. We’ve built ourselves cities, man made worlds so remote and disconnected we have placed ourselves inside jails, in fact we are in a zoo. You are an animal, and one your true nature recalls itself it is all flowing from there – in real situation you will not be a victim, all your faculties will come together, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual and they will align around one clear purpose – hang on to life no matter what, you will discover you are at pick performance, you are a superhero, and superheroes need no advice from me.

2- How challenging was it for you to have to relive these events while you were writing this book?

I thought it would be challenging, thought someone else should write it on my behalf. Then I just put a pen to a blank page and the words came like a meteorite shower, bursting out in what was a cathartic experience almost independent of me. The book wrote itself my greatness as a writer was not standing in its way, not trying to make it pretty, or analyze or give perspective, it is raw and simple and this is what makes it so powerful. Writing the book was challenging as I’ve faced my own darkness, scarier than the darkness of the jungle by night more ferocious than the jaguar prowling ready to attack. Standing naked in front of the blank pages allowing them to mirror it all. And readers can feel what between the lines, they sense who you are, not what you write.

3- What was your initial reaction upon learning that Jungle was really going to become a film?

It was a dream come true. I first arrived in Hollywood in 1990, manuscript at hands only to be disillusioned. Hollywood wasn’t ready for true stories. While fascinated by my pitch some of the city’s most famous producers sat there, jaw loosened, transfixed. But when I finished my pitch they saw so many problems.  Four guys, where is the girl? Four guys, where is the villain? An Israeli cannot be the protagonist, will have to make Yossi an American. And so on and on. There was one moment it was all done deal, Emilio Estevez was the lead as Yossi and we were ready to roll when I pulled the plug on it, days before prostituting myself and my story I escaped Hollywood and never planned to come back. To see the movie now come to the silver screen with such authenticity – the director Greg McLean wanted nothing but the raw true story, no embellishment, no dramatization, this is the time of Biopics – I am thrilled and privileged to see my dream finally come true.

4- Are there any other novels on real world survival situations that you would recommend to readers of Jungle?

Shackleton is the greatest of all, a must read classic. And Papillon, the book that inspired me to search for my own adventure and write my own story.

5- Since Daniel Radcliffe does play you in the film adaptation of Jungle, I have to ask, which Hogwarts house do you belong to?

Wow, you got me here. Though an avid reader myself, and with tremendous respect for the power of the Harry Potter cult phenomena, I never read a book of that series nor seen the movies. I simply don’t know what your question means.
