I’m Back!!! Where I’ve been, Celiac Disease, and 2018!

Good morning, my friends! Other than some pre-scheduled blog tour posts, I’ve been totally offline the past couple months, and it’s so great to finally be back! I’ve missed talking books with you guys so much!

So where have I been? Well, I’ve been having health problems for several years now, and it all just got really bad this fall. I couldn’t blog. I couldn’t keep up with social media. I felt so sick, I couldn’t even read!

In November, I was finally, finally diagnosed with Celiac Disease. If you don’t already know what Celiac Disease is, it’s an autoimmune disease where consuming gluten causes your body to attack your small intestine. In the past few weeks, I’ve eliminated all foods containing gluten from my diet, and today I am feeling so much better! Better than I’ve felt in at least ten years! It’s so crazy all the different ways Celiac was affecting me from indigestion, to anemia, to anxiety, to a complete lack of focus, and it’s amazing to finally not be struggling with those issues anymore.

I’ve spent the past couple months just recovering, watching a lot of Cake Boss (that’s my go-to show when I’m feeling sick), and I’ve been listening to a lot of audio books as well. Thanks to Audible, I did still manage to exceed my 200 book reading goal for 2017! From all the incredible books I read, the author events I got to attend, and my amazing book club, 2017 really was a fantastic year, even when I wasn’t feeling my best!

One thing that I learned from all of this is that I do need to slow down a bit and focus on my health as much as my book life. Because of that, I’ll be blogging a little less, blog hopping a little less, and I’m going to try to read less as well. Instead of shooting for 200 books in 2018, I’ll be trying for 100, which let’s be honest, really is still a lot of books to read in a year.

I’ve also been working on writing my own book, and my big goal for 2018 is to finish this draft! Now that I’m finally feeling good, I’ve been able to focus and write like I haven’t been able to in years and years. I will be attending some great writing conferences here in Utah in 2018, and I’m really excited to get more involved in our writing community here.

Our Utah book community is a huge part of my life, and it will definitely continue to be! We already have some amazing author events on our calendar for 2018, and I’m looking forward to doing more activities with our book club and spending even more time at my favorite local indie bookshop, The King’s English! Me and The Book Club Hubz will also be heading out to San Francisco in March, so we’ll be visiting some of my favorite book bloggers and a couple of the indie bookshops there as well, and I just can’t wait!

There are some books that I’m really looking forward to reading in 2018! Most of my most anticipated reads are contemporary novels, or books by my local authors, but here’s the books that are topping my 2018 TBR:

I know I’ve missed a bunch of blog comments and some amazing posts from you all, and I’m so sorry for that! But I’m also really excited to re-connect with all of you this year! Happy 2018 reading, everyone!

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been so sick! I hope you feel much better soon!
You’ve been working on a book? That’s so exciting! I wish there were more writing conferences near where I live, I’ve just been winging it lol But I wish you the absolute best of luck with your book! If you write a draft anything like you write your reviews then I know it’ll be fantastic, you have a great writing voice. What genre is your book? (If it’s a secret no worries, I’ll just wait and be curious 😉 )
You’ve got some great books on this list, I’m looking forwards to all the new books 2018 will bring us!
    Happy New Year <3

Thanks so much! It’s been a crazy year, but it’s so much better now. 🙂 I am working on a book. I’m just doing the zero draft now, so it’s awful, but it’s been so much fun! It’s a YA contemporary romance. I remember you saying that you wrote! How is it going for you? That’s such a bummer there aren’t more writing conferences where you are. If you’re ever looking for a CP, let me know. 🙂 Happy New Year to you! <3

      • Angela (pooled ink Reviews) says:

Aw I love a good YA romance! 😄 I’m so excited!
I’m currently working on a YA Post-Apocalyptic Western series. Well, it’s more like a series of standalones that are all loosely connected/in the same world. I’ve been enjoying the process but have hit a bit of a wall after becoming super busy with life and blogging and the holidays and thus lost my momentum a bit but I’m really hoping to dedicate more time to writing this year!
Thank you! When I’ve got something more solid to check out maybe I’ll see if you’re still interested in being a CP! 😊

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, my gosh! That sounds amazing! I am totally digging that idea and can’t wait to see what you do with it. I’m at least a couple months out from being read to exchange anything anyway, so just let me know when you’re ready! 🙂

I’m so sorry about your health issues, but I’m pleased that you’ve finally got a diagnosis! If you ever need someone to talk to about being chronic then DM me on Twitter; I’ll always be happy to chat. Reading for me is the main way I cope with being sick so I hope it helps you too ♥️ Welcome back to blogging (I’m returning today after a short break too) but make sure you look after yourself & put your health first in 2018! Lots of well wishes xxxxx

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. Reading really is such a wonderful escape when you aren’t feeling well. We should definitely chat sometime! I hope you’re doing well and happy New Year! <3

Sorry to hear you have been unwell. A friend of my has Celiac Disease, it took her a while to get the diagnosis, but they manage it well now. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Whishing you a happy and healthy new year in 2018 🙂

I am so very sorry that you have been away due to celiac disease. I know a few people who have it but have done well once it was recognized and managed.

I am happy to have you back and can’t wait to see you in March.

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thanks so much, Nancy! It’s definitely a huge relief to know what’s going on now. I am so excited to see you in March! <3<3<3

You must feel so relieved to finally have an answer and a solution! Slowing down is super hard, so I wish you tons of fortitude to do what you have to. Take care of yourself and have a wonderful and healthy 2018!

  6. Sophie @ Blame Chocolate says:

Oh I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been feeling unwell, Krysti! Celiac disease is awful, especially if you hadn’t been diagnosed and kept eating gluten… Thankfully, you’re better now! Let’s hope you recover fully in time to get some reading/blogging done 🙂
I’m sorry to hear you’ll be a lot more absent but one needs to prioritize health, always! So definitely take it easy on your body and do as much or as little as you think you can handle.
Best of luck hon, and Happy New Year! May 2018 be full of love and enjoy <3 <3

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thanks so much, Sophie! I’m doing so much better now. I’m so excited to be back to doing what I love and getting to chat about books with all of you! <3 I hope you have a truly wonderful 2018!!!

So glad to see you’re back!! I’ve missed seeing YA and Wine in my feed ❤️ I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well, though it’s great to hear you’ve figured out a way to manage your health better! My mom has a similar autoimmune disorder and she has to eat gluten-free, so I understand a bit of the struggle it can be. Hears to a great 2018 ahead of us!

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thank you so much! I’ve definitely missed you guys. I hope your mom is feeling well! Autoimmune disorders can be so hard. I hope you have a wonderful 2018!!! <3

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been sick but I’m glad you’re getting better. My grandmother was diagnosed with celiac disease 6 years ago, and I know how much she suffered. Happy new year!

So sorry to hear you had issues with your health but are on the mend. Knowing what the problem is and being able to treat it is 99% of the battle. Happy New Year.

Hy there! I found your blog via the Commenting365 spreadsheet and I just want to say you’re awesome <3 So happy to hear you're feeling much better than you were all these days! Also your blog is so pretty and i love your 20168 TBR!! Wishing you an amazing New Year!!

  12. Books, Vertigo and Tea says:

So wonderful that the removal of gluten is making such a positive difference and that you have some answers <3 I am stoked to see you online, but equally happy to read that you will be pacing yourself more. It took me a whole year of ups and downs to come to terms with how important it was to just slow down! Health has to take priority. Wishing you all of the best my friend <3

  13. Jackie B @ Death by Tsundoku says:

WELCOME BACK!!! I will admit, I was a bit worried– but I also took a sorta unplanned hiatus for the last two months of the year, so I can relate. I didn’t realize I had celiac disease, though!! That is a HUGE life change. I’m super glad you found a solution. There’s nothing worse than your body being out of whack with no understanding how to fix it.

You’re writing a novel?!??! Why does this not surprise me? I am super excited to learn more about it. Please please please share more when you’re comfortable. I promise to be first in line to pre-order. 😉

I hope that things continue to mend. You take care of yourself! Step back, do what you need to be happy and healthy. You have only one life– live it well. And remember; we will always be here for you. 😀

Your 2018 TBR looks AWESOME. Or, well, most-anticipated books. 😉 I don’t have one of my own 2018 TBR. But I *did* just finished The Paper Magician a few minutes ago (literally!). I’m not super sold on it after book one… should I keep reading?

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Thank you! I’ve really missed chatting with you! I hope you enjoyed your hiatus as well. It definitely seems like a lot of book bloggers get totally burned out by November/December. It’s kind of nice to have those two slower months for new releases.

I do write! Right now it is just utter garbage, but that’s what first drafts are for, right? LOL. I will definitely keep you posted.

Excellent, excellent advice, my friend! It’s definitely advice that sometimes takes hitting a wall to live by unfortunately, but it’s so true. And I’m so happy to have such wonderful friends in the book community! I seriously don’t know what I’d do without you guys!

I can’t wait to see what books you do end up reading in 2018! I think Charlie has a really unique writing style. It’s one you definitely love or don’t. So if you weren’t into The Paper Magician, then the rest of the series probably won’t be for you honestly.

      • Jackie B @ Death by Tsundoku says:

I saw that as well– I don’t recall seeing so much Q4 burnout in other years; I wonder what made 2017 Nov/Dec so challenging for so many bloggers? Regardless, I’m so glad that we’re back! 😀

I cannot be utter garbage. I don’t know if I’ll ever understand my friends who are writers. No one ever likes their first drafts, but few of the writers I know make it to a COMPLETE first draft; they just get stuck in re-write loops chanting, “This can be better! I can write better!” 😉 But seriously, I’m sure it’s awesome. I cannot wait to learn more.

I really love the magic system in The Paper Magician. It makes me wonder if I’ll enjoy the further books just to learn more about them? I have started drafting my review of The Paper Magician and if anything, it’s taught me that I’ve learned a lot about writing since I started blogging more! There are soooo many things Jackie of 3 years ago wouldn’t have ever noticed. So many things.

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

That’s a great question, because it definitely seems like it was widespread. We’re all reading and trying to promote too many amazing books!

Well, it is pretty rough, but it’s okay. I’m intentionally forcing myself to just write badly so I don’t get stuck in those re-write loops you mentioned. I’ll try to make it prettier later.

I adore that magic system as well! Especially the paper magic, because books coming to life! LOL. It is amazing how much you learn about writing and publishing by being a Book blogger!

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

You’re too sweet! Right now I’m just taking it super slow. I want to keep focused on my health for now, and I’m taking it easy on everything else still. How have you been doing lately?

      • Jackie B @ Death by Tsundoku says:

I’m doing well! We are in high gear with wedding planning, that’s for sure. That, coupled with a lot of changes at work, is definitely keeping me busy. AND we got a dog in September!! He’s a super sweet 68 pound rescue mutt we’ve named Kurosh (the Persian transliteration of Cyrus the Great, King of Kings). He’s willful, but slowly becoming part of our pack. 😀

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Wow!!! So many exciting (and stressful) things! I’m so happy for you! When are you getting married?

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, yay!!! March is a great month to get married! Our anniversary is on the 14th! I’m so excited for you. It is totally overwhelming, but it will turn out great! I can’t wait to hear about it! 🙂

      • Jackie B @ Death by Tsundoku says:

Great minds think alike, yes? I am getting more excited each day for the upcoming wedding, but the fear is a bit more each day, too. Why are these so complicated?! 😉 Don’t worry– there will totally be a self-centered wedding-specific post afterwards. I am counting on it.

  14. bookprincessreviews says:

So, so glad that you’re back! Totally missed you, and even though you’ll be blogging a bit less, I can’t wait to see what you have in store! It’s amazing that you had to go through that so long and it wasn’t until now that it was figured out. I’m so so glad that you’re feeling better since books and writing need you! <3 Can't wait to see what 2018 has in store for you, and hope it's just chalk full of good things. 🙂

    • KrystiYAandWine says:

Yay!!! I’m so glad to be back! I’ve already said this, but I missed you!!! You are my go to friend to chat about swoony books with! I hope you got through your busy season at work okay and that you’re doing well! Tell me all about it. <3

      • bookprincessreviews says:

Yes, I missed chatting with you too! It’s been so much less swoony without you to chat about it with. I actually just read a particular one that was SUPER swoony. I saw you had Love, Hate, and Other Filters on your TBR, and it so has the swoons/feels. SO cute. And yes! All the cranky people came out after the holidays for some odd reason??

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Oh, yay!!! I’m super excited to read Love, Hate, and Other filters! I was going to start it this week, but I had to pick up the Lunar Chronicles instead! Which I’m sure we also need to fangirl about! ☺️☺️☺️ It’s so true about the cranky people around the holidays. How weird is that?!

      • bookprincessreviews says:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I saw you were reading Cress?????? Just you wait until you get to Cress and Thorne. SWOONS SWOONS AND MORE SWOONS. *crying already* You have to keep me updated. You had only read the first one, right?

      • KrystiYAandWine says:

Hahaha! YES!!!! I haven’t finished it yet. I was really sick this past couple weeks, so it put me way behind on reading unfortunately, but I’m LOVING it so far. I think Scarlet is my favorite so far, but maybe this one will pass it up! I had only read the first one until recently. Now, I’m just bingeing her books. 🙂
