Sixteen-year old Anna Arden was once just the magically barren girl from an elite Luminate family. Now she has broken the Binding—and Praetheria, the creatures held captive by the spell, wreak havoc across Europe. Lower-class citizens have access to magic for the first time, while other Luminates lose theirs forever. Austria and Hungary are at odds once more.
Anna Arden did not know breaking the Binding would break the world.
Anna thought the Praetheria were on her side, content and grateful to be free from the Binding. She thought her cousin Matyas’s blood sacrifice to the disarm the spell would bring peace, equality, justice. She thought her future looked like a society that would let her love a Romani boy, Gabor.
But with the Monarchy breathing down her neck and the Praetheria intimidating her at every turn, it seems the conspiracies have only just begun.
As threat of war sweeps the region, Anna quickly discovers she can’t solve everything on her own. Now there’s only one other person who might be able to save the country before war breaks out. The one person Anna was sure she’d never see again. A bandit. A fellow outlaw. A man known as the King of Crows. Matyas.

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

My Review

Lost Crow Conspiracy is truly historical fantasy at it’s finest. The story itself is enchanting, and the way in which Eves incorporates historical figures and details along with actual folklore from the region the story takes place in is just extraordinary.

Returning to the gorgeous world Eves has created was an absolute delight. I am so captivated by the setting, the magic system, and the social environment in this series. Every element is beautifully crafted, and it creates such a wonderfully immersive reading experience.

The stakes felt even higher in Lost Crow Conspiracy than in book 1, and all of the political machinations, scheming, intrigue, and drama had me absolutely glued to these pages. Eves has managed to capture the spirit and furor of a revolution, and reading it was an exhilarating experience.

I am absolutely in love with these characters! Anna, Gabor, Matias, all of them. I cannot get enough. They are each so well-developed, and it was so much fun seeing even more of each of them in this story. Anna is such a smart, strong young woman, and reading through her perspective is a joy.

One of my favorite things about Blood Rose Rebellion was the way Eves incorporated actual folklore throughout the story. One of my favorite things about Lost Crow Conspiracy is that she delved even deeper into that folklore and made it such an integral part of the plot and in such an organic way. There are some truly wonderful characters in the Praetheria, and having that increased focus on them in this book was just so much fun. They really added an extra layer of fantasy and enchantment to the story.

I feel like YA authors in general have really been stepping up their book 2 game lately, and this is no exception. I loved book 1, but I actually loved Lost Crow Conspiracy even more. The writing is lovely. The characters are dynamic. And I simply cannot wait to read more in this incredible series.

About the Author

Rosalyn Eves grew up in the Rocky Mountains, dividing her time between reading books and bossing her siblings into performing her dramatic scripts. As an adult, the telling and reading of stories is still one of her favorite things to do. She dislikes housework on principle.

She has a PhD in English from Penn State, which means she also endeavors to inspire college students with a love for the English language. Sometimes it even works.
